One of our most satisfying strategies in adopting a whole foods diet has been growing our own! Having tasty, fresh food waiting to be harvested just outside the back door makes it easier to stay on track and enjoy maximum “just picked” nutrition with our meals.

Add to that the satisfying workout and stress relief that digging, planting, weeding and tending provide (not to mention the exposure to beneficial microbes contained in the organically composted soil that we have been building up here over the last 5 years), and the satisfaction of simply enjoying the space and seeing our plantings grow and provide for us, and our garden feels to me like one of the best companions one can have on this journey back to health.
The wild arugula has gone to flower and buzzes with bees and other pollinators all day.
We are in the thick of harvest season here at our little cabin – enjoying the fruits of our labor this past spring with salad greens, arugula, tomatoes, garlic (50 heads this year!) herbs, berries, and some nice looking hops as well!
We’re hoping to try gleaning later this fall when harvest season is over to stock up on winter squash, etc. if possible. And I just bought a book on foraging to study over the quieter winter months. We are loving the many options available here for whole, fresh, nutritious food!
